AA qualitative research study examining the experiences
and lifestyles of 12 families in Turkey who had
children with Down’s syndrome found that those families
had limited social contact with others. They often feared
humiliation and negative reactions from strangers. Some
found that grandparents blamed the mother for having a
child with a developmental delay. However, almost all of
the mothers described having “great affection for their
child.”8 This study was small and limited to the experience
by Turkish parents. Nevertheless, it attempts to
explain the social, economic, physical, and emotional
impact of having a child with Down’s syndrome.
