As computers are used more and more in education, the need for human factors guidelines governing the student-computer interface becomes increasingly urgent. A framework is provided for designers of CAI systems to help identify some of the critical human factor issues. Specific recommendations for screen design are made with respect to such factors as simplicity, spaciousness, relevance, standardization, and changing screen contents. Further recommendations regarding display coding are made with respect to color coding, shape and size coding, and brightness coding.
