Early career teachers believed lack of time, poor student behavior, safety issues related to taking an investigative approach, and the lack of availability of equipment in good working order to be barriers to taking an investigative approach. These factors were also reported as barriers to taking an investigative approach by New Zealand science teachers during the curriculum stocktake (McGee et al., 2003). In the current study time, safety issues and student behaviour were perceived as less of a hindrance as teachers gained experience and the resources and equipment were perceived as more of a hindrance.
