A more difficult situation can arise when students who are selected for a particular group are unwilling to work together. They need help to understand that it is possible to learn from each other and to overcome the feeling that their understanding is something they have earned and is therefore not to be shared. Some students are very generous in the group work situation; others want credit for what they do themselves and don't want to be associated with work they consider to be inferior. Long-term group work such as this allows students the time to discover their own strengths and also those of other students, some of whom they may have tended to dismiss as having little to offer.
