Hatyai is a city in southern Thailand. In 2008 it had a
population of 157,359 in the core city and about 800,000
people live in the Greater Hatyai area. It is the biggest city
in Southern Thailand and the second largest metropolitan
area in Thailand. Although it is not the provincial capital, it
is the business center of Songkhla province. The name
Hatyai is a short version of Ma Hat Yai, meaning big ma hat tree. It was originally named Khok Sa-Met Choon

Songkhla with the main North-South route was moved to Khok Su-Met Choon in 1922 when the area where it
had been located, turned out to be prone to flooding. Khok Su-Met Choon had only four residences at that time,
but it quickly developed into a small town. By 1935. It covered an area of 4.4 square kilometers and was
administrated by its first mayor. But Hatyai was not designated as a thesaban mueang until 1949 and was finally
upgraded to a city in 1995.
