Conclusion
The authors set out to explore the effects of music therapy on the behaviour of older people with dementia. In various research studies, music therapy has exhibited short-term effects on the behaviour of older people with dementia with live, individualized music being most beneficial. Levels of agitation were reduced, including verbally aggressive and of non-physically aggressive behaviour. Music therapy promotes positive effects in mood and socialization of patients diagnosed with dementia. These positive effects also extend to caregivers. Undoubtedly, healthcare providers have a role to play in the provision of music therapy.
