Starting in late 1993, WILMEC refocused its strategy away from the machine fabrication industry into various service industries. WILMEC sold all of its custom
machine engineering, manufacturing, and sales operations to International Machine and Tool (IMT) of Bonn, Germany, in mid-1995. IMT was itself the result of a 1987 merger between Europe’s two largest machine manufacturers International Machines (English translation) of Germany and Tools of Commerce (English translation) of Italy.
Numerous plant closings and consolidations had rippled through Europe as well as the United States in the late
1980s and early 1990s.
