In online banking web applications for example, the user has to authenticate himself via a valid username and password to initiate a transaction. Directly after this transaction request, the user gets an SMS message containing the OTP that must be additionally entered to authorize the transaction. In this application area the OTP is called a mobile Transaction Authorization Number (mobile TAN or mTAN).
