Edward took Tom's arm, but it was still hurting, and Tom gave a little cry.
'That soldier hurt you,' Edward said angrily.
'Oh, it is nothing-' Tom began, but the little prince was not listening.
'He did a terrible thing, and he will be sorry!' Edward said. He began to run out of the room, then stopped. He took a large ring that was lying on the table and went to put it in a cupboard. But he could not open the cupboard, so he put the ring under the carpet in the corner of the room, and then ran to the gate, his face hot and his eyes angry.
'You - soldier. Come here!' Edward shouted. But the soldier hit him on the ear.
'Take that, beggar,' he shouted. 'That's because you got me in trouble with the prince earlier.
'I am the prince,' said Edward. But the soldier looked at the little boy in rags and pulled him through the gates, then closed them.
'Go away you stupid little beggar,' he said angrily.
'Open the gates at once!' Edward shouted. 'I am Prince Edward.' But the laughing crowd pushed him away and hit him.
'Make way,' they laughed. 'Here comes Prince Edward!'
