Share of Ethiopian Coffee Export in Japanese Market
Japan has been the second largest importer of Ethiopian coffee, after Germany. The share of Ethiopian coffee export in Japanese market, albeit small, had a healthy and dominantly positive trend until 2004 when it had a maximum annual
average share of 13.3 percent in terms of volume (Table 11) while the highest annual average figure for the value share was 11.4 percent that was recorded in 2006.
For the whole period of analysis (1988 through 2009), the overall average shares in volume and value terms were 8.5 and 7.8 percent respectively. For the purpose of analysis, the whole period of study has been divided into four time
horizons. The first three time spans have duration of 6 years each and the fourth one has duration of four years. Accordingly, when observed based on the different time horizons, the trend showed an increase for most of the periods of analysis. The annual average share for the years 1988 through 1993 (first time horizon), was 6.8 percent in
volume and 7.5 percent in terms of value.
The share increased to around 8.5 and 7.6 percent in volume and value terms, respectively, for the years 1994 through 1999 (second time horizon). Furthermore, the share mounted to about 11.1 and 9.3 percent in volume and value terms respectively, during 2000 through 2005 (third time horizon). During the fourth time period, in 2006 for instance, the share was 13 percent in volume and 11.4 percent in value terms(a maximum value share for the whole period), which afterwards decreased to about 10.9 and 9.8 percent in terms of volume (Table 11) and value (Table 10) in 2007.
Surprisingly, however, the share of Ethiopian coffee in Japanese market showed a dramatic decline to only 3.5 percent in 2008 and even further to a very low and negligible level of 0.5 percent by volume in 2009. In a similar manner, the value
share of Ethiopian coffee export in Japan decreased to its low level of 0.8 percent in 2009 from its maximum level of 11.4 percent in 2006.
