1﴿ Online gaming
In Thailand the government is worried about the number of young people who are
addicted to online games. It is now seen as a bigger problem than drinking or taking
drugs and parents are saying that something must be done. The government is
thinking about banning the use of game servers between 10pm and 6am and limiting
the hours that Internet cafés can stay open.
Online gaming is very popular in Japan and Korea too, but in Thailand over half a
million people have subscribed to one product, Ragnorak Online, the Korean
roleplaying game. The games are addictive because players can create their own
fantasy world and live within a community of other players. It is very easy to get hooked
and spend hours sitting at a computer screen.
Some gamers have spoken about how being addicted to the games ruined their lives.
They say that they stopped being themselves and became a character from a game.
One gamer said, "Online I was a very powerful man and all the other players respected
me. I didn’t want to live my boring real life."
Of course, not all games will become addicted and most can control how long they
spend playing the games. Everyone agrees that children need to be protected,
especially as some of the games are quite violent, but most people think that it is the
parents’ job to stop children playing too often. The government stopping everyone’s fun
may not be the best solution.
