heat flow through the crust is unusually high. Another problem is that rocks are poor heat conductors. This becomes a problem because some geothermal plants are able to remove heat at a faster rate than it can be replaced. In other situations the rate of water being withdrawn is greater than the recharge rate, which not and only depletes the resource but can also lead to serious land-subsidence problems (Chapters ). In the case of electrical production and space heating, geothermal energy therefore is not always renewable. Fortunately, the problems associated with land subsidence and withdrawing heat too quickly can be minimized by injecting the warm wastewater into the subsurface rather than discharging it on the land surface. Another useful technique is to extract geothermal heat on a cyclic rather than a continuous basis. This allows the thermal energy to build back up between production cycles. Nevertheless, even if mitigation steps are taken, geothermal electricity and space heating will always be restricted to relatively small geographic areas where suitable geothermal reservoirs are found.
In contrast, geothermal heat pumps can be utilized almost anywhere. This form of geothermal energy therefore has the potential of making a significant contribution to society’s effort to reduce its use of fossil fuels. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (the EPA), geothermal heat pumps use 44% less electricity than air-based systems, and 72% less than electric heating and standard air conditioning systems. Despite the increased efficiency, builders and homeowners tend to avoid installing geothermal heat pumps because of the relatively high installation costs. However, these costs are usually recovered in two to ten years from the savings in reduced electrical consumption.
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
Every day the oceans absorb about 70% of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth, converting the sunlight into a vast amount of thermal energy. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is a technique that makes use of a simple heat engine, which is driven by the heat energy stored within the oceans. An OTEC plant draws in warm water from the ocean surface along with cold water from great depths, and then uses the temperature difference of these two waters to drive a turbine and electrical generator. Experimental OTEC plants have been built by Japan and the United States and have shown the technology to be a cost-effective means of generating electricity. One OTEC design, shown in Figure 14.26, incorporates a closed-loop system that contains an ammoniabased fluid. When the warm seawater is pumped through a heat exchanger, the ammonia within the pipes begins to boil and turns into a gas. The ammonia vapor is then used to spin a turbine and electrical generator. From there the gas is piped through a second heat exchanger that is being flushed with cold seawater, causing the ammonia to condense back into a liquid. The other basic OTEC design takes the incoming warm seawater and places it under a vacuum, which causes it to boil. The resulting steam is then used to drive the electrical generator as opposed to vaporized ammonia. Engineers included this additional step of vaporizing seawater so that valuable freshwater could be produced as a by-product of generating electricity, thereby making the overall system more cost-effective.
Although OTEC plants produce a net gain of electricity (generate more power than they consume), a large-scale demonstration plant has yet to be built due to a lack of investors or government support. The primary problem is that conventional coal-fired power plants are still the cheapest way to produce electricity. Another problem is that for an OTEC plant to operate efficiently, it must be located where the temperature difference between the warm and cold seawater is at least 36 ํF (20 ํC), which restricts OTEC to tropical waters. In addition, to draw in water that is cool enough, the plant’s cold intake pipe must reach a depth of around 3,000 feet (1,000 m). This means that OTEC plants can only be built on coastlines where the slope of the seafloor is quite steep. Otherwise, the distance from shore to where the water is sufficiently deep would require building and maintaining an excessively long intake pipe, thereby making the entire operation uneconomical. This presents yet another problem in that most of the suitable tropical sites that do exist are located far from major population centers and large electrical demands. One proposed solution (Figure 14.27A) is to build a floating OTEC plant that would send power to a city on the mainland via a transmission cable. Another solution is to have a floating plant use the electricity it produces to separate hydrogen from seawater (Figure 14.27B). The hydrogen would then be stored on the platform and eventually loaded onto tankers for transport to major population centers. From there the hydrogen could be used as a transportation fuel. While all this is feasible, any major contributions from OTEC to the world’s energy supplies are at best many years away.
