The provisioning of higher end-user data rates, allowing for faster access to information, has been the key driving force for the development and evolution of 3G and 4G wireless-access technologies.
This quest will continue in the future. For next-generation wireless-access networks we envision data rates on the order of 10 Gb/s for specific scenarios, such as indoor offices and university campuses.
More importantly, data rates of more than 100 Mb/s should be generally available in urban and suburban environments. And finally, to provide a truly ubiquitous connectivity, rates of at least a few Mb/s should be available essentially everywhere, including far-off rural and deep indoor environments.
