Similar results were obtained for toxicity assessment of detergents
using other aquatic organisms. For example, Pettersson et al.
(2000) evaluated the toxicity of 26 different detergents using
Daphnia magna as a test organism and reported EC50 values ranging
from 4.0 to 1615 mg L1 and 3.2 to 673 mg L1, after 24 and 48 h,
respectively. Sodium silicate (a component of detergents) gave an
EC50 of 494 mg L1 after 48 h exposure for Daphnia magna (Dowden
and Bennett, 1965) but the same chemical gave a 48 h EC50
of 1.47 mg L1 for C. cf. dubia (Warne and Schifko, 1999).
