Specific national guidance for
control of CDI comes from the Department of Health publication ‘C. difficile infection: how to deal with the
problem. In order to improve early identification of the
infection, the guidance recommends that a protocol represented
by the acronym ‘SIGHT’ is applied in all cases of
diarrhoea: Suspect that a case may be infective where there is
no clear alternative cause for diarrhoea, Isolate the patient
immediately while determining the cause of the diarrhoea,
Gloves and aprons must be used for all contacts with the
patient and their environment, Hand washing with soap and
water should be carried out before and after each contact
with the patient and their environment and Test the stool for
toxin by sending a specimen immediately
