Traditionally knowledge and skills related to Kara-Zhorga were taught and practiced within communities. This traditional form of learning is still present in certain remote areas of Kazakhstan as well as in Kazakh communities residing in Mongolia and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.
Due to the fact that dance was rarely practiced during Soviet time, transmission of knowledge and skills was mostly performed by the bearers of the element, researchers and professional dancers like Aubakir Ismailov. Detailed description of dance moves and techniques are described in the book written by Aubakir Ismailov and Dauren Abirov “Kazakh Folk Dances” published in two volumes in 1961 and 1988.
Modern students, aspiring dancers taught in arts academies, choreographic institutions, dance studios and folk ensembles learn skills of Kara-Zhorga dance on the basis of this book and works of other researchers as well as traditional knowledge of particular instructors. In this regard significant number of amateur dance groups continue to practice and keep the dance alive.
