Biological molecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, bear numerous
functional groups that can undergo acid-base reactions. Properties of these
molecules vary with the acidities of the solutions in which they are immersed.
Almost all experimental techniques in biochemistry therefore involve the use
of buffer solutions, solutions that resist a change in pH on the addition of acid
or alkali. This practical is aimed to help students understand the concept of
the buffer system and be familiar with the buffer preparation.
