This scheme of questioning can be used to identify organizational characteristics and to
determine the compatibility between the different elements. In asking these questions we are
building on the idea that the organization consists of interrelated subsystems of a strategic,
human, technological, structural, and managerial nature (see Exhibit 3.3 discussed earlier),
which need to be internally consistent and adapted to environmental conditions. Our answers
can be plotted as shown in Exhibit 3.6, to reveal congruencies and incongruencies.
