This paper is presented as a first of two papers exploring how we as nurses can humanise the care that patients receive. This first article presents a theoretical framework developed by Todres et al. (2009) which explores some central aspects of what it is to be human. Eight dimensions of humanisation - dehumanisation are also identified (Box 1) and together these capture the essential aspects that make us human, and examine these within the context of the care environment. Part 2 will explore the role that nursing education has in educating nurses about humanising care.
