But not all are stable in tissue culture. The bulbous internodes of Bambusa ventricosa were lost after tissue culture (Huang and Huang, 1995) and variegation of stems and leaves disappears very often in tissue culture. Tissue culture has been associated with molecular aberrations in general (including also chromosomal defects), and phenotypic defects may show up only some years later. Therefore it is important to devise methods of quality control at the tissue culture stages to minimise the potential danger of such defects, for example when plants of Stage VI are sold in large quantities.
