Kampong Chheuteal High School : The Mark of Friendship of Thailand and Cambodia
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has been interested in the Khmer culture since she was studying in post-primary level. In addition to studying general foreign languages such as English and French, she studied Khmer language until she can read and write the ancient Khmer inscription.
Her first official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia was on 25 August 1992 at the invitation of Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Considering that Cambodia is regarded as the Land of Heritage of the world, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn paid a regular visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia several times with interest in archaeology and art history.
After visiting this neighbouring country many times, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn was impressed by the warm reception of Cambodian people which inspired her to establish a school as the lasting gift bestowed to the people of the Kingdom of Cambodia in recognition of their hospitality and in celebration of the felicitous relationship of the peoples of the two nations. Therefore, by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's command, many agencies of the government and the private sectors participated in this project as the Committee of the School under the Royal Sponsorship chaired by Her Royal Highness herself.
The Cambodian government led by Somdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia therefore provided the site of the school ; the designated land is located in the Province of Kampong Thom in the central area of the Kingdom of Cambodia. In October 2000, the Cambodian government decided on the construction of the school on the compound of 60,000 square metres. Later on, in February 2001, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport issued a memoir indicating the decision to expand the site to 200 metres wide and 400 metres deep or 45 rais (7.2 hectares).
