I. First thought sketch
a) The irrational, happy moment
b) Self-expression
c) His own personal experience
d) The artist’s personal experience must be emphasized by strong feeling , enthusiasm, emotion or the result is not art.
e) What one does not strongly feel oneself , he cannot expect to others to find strong feelings in his pictures.
f) The artist , closeted in his studio, at first inspired by his work and buoyed by that supreme confidence which alone produces masterpieces, arrives by chance to cast his glance outward on the stage where it will be judged , and on the judges who await it as soon as his ardour is drained . He looks back sadly on his work . Too much contempt awaits this chaste child born of his enthusiasm….He modifies it, spoils it, he overworks it; all this civilizing and polishing in order not to displease. Delacroix
g) Work up quick sketches to test the spirit of that which occurs to the artist.
