Access onto and over the beach from the hinterland is
particularly difficult for disabled beach users. The Ocean Shore
Management Plan (Oregon Parks and Recreation Department,
2005) identifies the key challenges for beach amenity managers
in providing disabled access, including keeping access slopes
and distances to a minimum, keeping pathways clear of sand
and noticeable to those with visual impairment, and keeping
enough space for other beach users who will also preferentially
use the easier access, such as children or the elderly. All of
these issues can also be addressed within the development of
coastal-defence schemes through appropriate design and by
considering such issues at an early stage.
