Treatment Goals
› Promote Optimum Maternal/Fetal Outcomes and Reduce Risk of Complications
• Frequently monitor maternal BP/vital signs and fetal status, assess all maternal physiologic systems, and review laboratory/
other diagnostic test results; immediately report abnormalities and treat, as ordered
–Monitor closely for preeclampsia complications (for details, see Red Flags , below)
• Administer prescribed antihypertensive drugs to patients with severe HTN
–Monitor treatment efficacy and for adverse effects
• Administer magnesium sulfate to prevent seizures in patients with eclampsia, as ordered. Monitor for excessive serum
magnesium and administer prescribed I.V. 10% calcium gluconate as the antidote
