Cofer and Mabry struggled with two different world , one having to live by cultural standards and the other having to face reality with living in poverty but both were able to obtain a college education. Judith Ortiz Cofer , in Don 't call me Hot Tamale , and Marcus Mabry in living in two worlds, both felt that they lived a double life, one life while being with their family and home and another life while obtaining an education. Judith Ortiz Cofer as a child was raised in Puerto Rico ; felt that she had to live up to her cultures expectations to dress. and act in a certain way. Marcus Mabry was raised in New Jersey and often found himself feeling sad and ashamed of his family's poverty.
Cofer feel that even though she's been able to master the English language . she is unable to escape from being from the island of Puerto Rico. being Latina and clearly belonging to Rita Moreno's gene pool , the island travels with her . Raised in a Catholic home and with tight surveillance by her parents she had to live by and honor her culture ; to live and eat and even dress to he culture's standards. The girls and women in her culture were expected to act . and dress like women in clothes that was too mature . It was natural for the women in the island to dress in primary colors and that showed their skin as a way to keep cool and as well to be sexy. Trying to escape the stereotype of being from the island of Puerto Rico is note say Even though Cofer , as a Latina belonging to the Rita Moreno's gene pool , the island . followed her everywhere. She still felt like one of the lucky ones out of the thousands of Latina without the privilege. of the education her parents gave her , the opportunity to go to collage and get educated.
Mabry is from New Jersey and was raised in poverty . He often found himself having to struggle with the reality of separating himself from. his family and his college life. he felt ashamed and helpless with his upbringing , but at the same time he knew that in order for him to escape from poverty he needed to obtain an education. He felt helpless watching his mother struggle to make sure that his brother did not lead. down the wrong path. The only time he felt that he could escape. from the reality of his home was when he returned to campus where it was relatively modern. Mabry eventually felt pride , knowing that his family was the reason why he went on to accomplish what he wanted the most ,which was his college education, and the fact that his family was able to survive it inspired to even write about his family and see what they have become.
In the end ,both Cofer and Mabry accomplished what they wanted , which was to have an education , to be able to write about their families , about where they have been , where they come from and who they are. Even Though they struggled with their upbringing , they still got a sense of pride of who they are and where they came from . It isn't always easy to escape or even leave behind their past,but it ' s what helped them become who they are today.
