The biggest dinosaur ever to walk the planet is to be unveiled by Sir David Attenborough in a new BBC show.
The 70-tonne titanosaur, which at 37 metres from nose to tail is nearly the length of four London buses, was discovered by a Patagonian shepherd, who found the tip of a giant thigh bone sticking out of a rock at La Flecha Farm in the Argentinian province of Chubut, in 2014.
The femur, or thigh bone, was 2.4 metres long, the largest that has ever been found.
For comparison ‘Dippy’ the Diplodocus at the Natural History Museum in London is 26m long.
Palaeontologists later discovered more than 220 fossilised bones, belonging to seven separate dinosaurs, one of which is thought to be the biggest creature ever to walk the earth.
The number of bones found allowed experts to asssess the weight of the dinosaur more accurately, with the final estimate being 70 metric tonnes.
Dreadnaughtus, another large titanosaur, is now estimated to be 30-40 metric tons in weight, so is much smaller
The blue whale is heavier but not comparable as it lives in the sea.
Some of the bones weighed over half a metric ton, so were hard to move from their remote location, which was more than three hours from the nearest town.
Analysis of the leg bones shows that these vast titanosaurs were young adults, in their prime but they were still growing. So we now know that a fully grown specimen would have been even bigger.
Evidence shows that all of the bones belonged to a new species. The name of this new species will be announced soon when the scientific paper is published.
Dr Diego Pol, lead scientist on the excavation based at the Museum of Paleontology Egidio Feruglio, in Trelew, Argentina said: “It was like a paleontological crime scene, a unique thing that you don’t find anywhere else in the world with the potential of discovering all kinds of new facts about titanosaurs.
"According to our estimates this animal weighed 70 tons. A comparison of the back bones shows that this animal was 10 per cent larger than Argentinosaurus, the previous record holder. So we have discovered the largest dinosaur ever known."
Filmed over two years, Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur, which will air on BBC One on January 24, follows the scientists’ forensic investigations, as they seek to prove that the beast is the largest ever to be discovered. It will also feature a 37-metre model of the newly-discovered giant.
CGI modelling carried out for the programme will allow viewers to see inside the creature, which had a heart that weighed the same as three people.
The dinosaurs were from the cretaceous period 66 to 145 million years ago, a time when large dinosaurs dominated South America
Experts said that the beast, which was dated more precisely to 101.6 million years old, would have eaten the equivalent of a skip-full of plants in a day.
