A woman has died in a freak accident with a boom gate as she tried to collect her parking ticket at a Gold Coast shopping centre.
The 61-year-old was having trouble with her parking ticket yesterday afternoon so she opened her door to lean out of the car and reach towards the ticket machine, The Courier Mail reports.
In doing so she appears to have hit the accelerator and smashed into the boom gate.
Upon impact she fell out of her car and suffered serious head injuries before going into cardiac arrest, the newspaper reports.
Foti Afantenos, who was at the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre when the accident happened about 2pm yesterday, said he saw the woman "jumping" out of her car as she hit the boom gate.
"She wasn't moving, just lying there," he said.
He and four other bystanders rushed to her aid but they felt her pulse beat for the last time just a few minutes before paramedics arrived.
"We did the best we could, it is so sad, I give my condolences to her family," Mr Afantenos said.
Paramedics said the trauma the woman suffered likely led to her going into cardiac arrest.
A Pacific Fair spokeswoman said the accident was being investigated.
A Worksafe Health and Safety Queensland spokesman said an inspector had also been sent to the site to investigate with police.
Last night police had still not identified the woman's next of kin.
