Antimicrobial and antiprotozoal
The use of H. sabdariffa as an effective antimicrobial agent isgarnering popularity. Fullerton et al. [34] investigated the antimi-crobial activity of H. sabdariffa calyx extract on Escherichia coliO157:H7 isolates. At a concentration of 10%, the methanolicextract exerted the maximum inhibitory effect on the pathogen,as determined by disk diffusion assay. Jung et al. [35] evaluatedantimicrobial activity of its ethanolic extract against Bacillus subtilis(ATCC6633) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC6538). Inhibition wasobserved by the paper disc method. Perez-Torres et al. [36] investi-gated the effects H. sabdariffa L. extract administration on the liverfatty acid profile of metabolic syndrome rats. The infusion reversedthe adverse metabolic profile by restoring the normal body mass,intra-abdominal fat, triglycerides, insulin, blood pressure, vasore-laxation and polyunsaturated fatty acid.
