TNT is one of the most commonly used explosives by the military
as well as private companies, such as the mining industry. TNT
has been spread into the environment in noteworthy amounts due
to its handling which can cause contamination of both soil and
water sources. Spreading of TNT may begin already during the production where
soil within the manufacturing plant is known to be contaminated
by rinsing water (red water). TNT contaminated locations include
explosives storage sites, disposal areas and military shooting
ranges. TNT is highly toxic already in small concentrations and is
listed as a possible human carcinogen. Remediation
of TNT contaminated soil is crucial in order to reduce the
adverse effects on living organisms and its overall impact on the
environment.
