SINGAPORE: The Malaysian ringgit slumped to a new all-time low against the Singapore dollar on Monday (Jun 8), hurt by bearish sentiment toward emerging Asian currencies amid further signs of Chinese economic weakness.
According to Bloomberg data, the ringgit was traded at around 2.7691 to the Singapore dollar in the late Asian session, pulling back from an intraday low of 2.7724.
The Malaysian ringgit also hit a nine-year low against the US dollar, after robust US jobs data on Friday bolstered expectations of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve before year-end.
As a whole, Asian currencies have been weighed down by recent data showing that China's imports slid 17.6 per cent in May from a year earlier, suggesting that domestic demand in the world's second-largest economy remains sluggish.
