Water continues to be one of the most contentious issues that surround proposed Marcellus Shale
drilling in New York. Concerns have been raised about the amount of water required, the chemicals used in
the hydraulic fracturing process, the fate of the fluid that stays in the well after the shale has been fractured,
and the storage and disposal of the fluid that returns to the surface. This paper will describe the water that
comes out of the wells after the fracturing process. It is designed to be read in conjunction with Marcellus
Shale Issue 7: Water – Into the Wells for a more complete picture of water and the Marcellus Shale.
