Chromatography was invented in 1906 by Michael Tswett, a
Russian botanist. He used the technique to separate various plant
pigments such as chlorophylls and xanthophylls, by passing
solutions of them through glass columns packed with finely divided
CaCO3. The separated species appeared as colored bands on
