Lesson COG 36
Task: Identify letters.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, ADT 4, ADT 5, COG 22
Concept: This task is similar to the previous skill (COG 35) of identifying numbers. It is recommended that block-style capital letters be used. Efforts made here are to improve discrimination skills (identifying between two letters) and associative abilities (understanding the name that goes with a specific letter).
Behavioral Objective: When presented with five randomly selected letters, the student will be able to point to a letter named by the instructor to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Two sets of cards for each letter of the alphabet.
Task Analysis:
1. Review with the student each of the flash cards and the associated name for each card.
2. Using the prerequisite skill of pointing to an object (ADT 4), present two cards and ask the student to point to one of the two cards that has been named. Use physical guidance if necessary.
3. Using the prerequisite skill of "match letters" (COG 22), hand the student two flash cards. Present before the student a card that matches one of the two that the student holds and ask the student to hand you the matching card. You should also state the name of the letter being requested. Continue this exercise until all letters have been presented and matched.
4. Continue the concepts of Steps 2 and 3, gradually increasing the number of choices presented to the student to five.
5. Randomly present five single-letter flash cards to the student, asking him or her to point to the letter presented.
6. Incrementally add cards to the concept in Step 5 so that the student is selecting from a field of five choices that arc randomly arranged. Continue until the objective is met.
