There is variation in the way ‘masculine’ and
‘feminine’ are defined across different social
settings or contexts, so it is more appropriate to use
the terms ‘masculinities’ and ‘femininities’ (plural).
‘Hegemonic masculinity’ refers to the current form
of masculinity held in highest regard in a particular
social context; it is an ideal to which most men
aspire and/or against which they measure
themselves. In general, hegemonic masculinity is
characterised by attributes such as: striving for
power and dominance, aggressiveness, courage,
independency, efficiency, rationality, competitiveness,
success, activity, control and invulnerability;
not perceiving or admitting anxiety, problems and
burdens; and withstanding danger, difficulties and
threats (Möller-Leimkühler, 2003, p.3).
