Few of such legendry records and stories, unconfirmed, are registered in the history of the gentleman’s game.
Scoring 286 runs on just 1 ball is one of such legend which has no evidence and this is why few take it seriously while few count it as a myth.
So, before deciding the reality, lets read the entire story behind this game as there is no video or picture available of the match.
According Pall Mall Gazette, an English journal from London, reported this story which got space in the paper in 1894.
According to the reports, this amazing match was played between Victoria and another neighbourhood team.
One of Victorian batsman hit the first ball of innings into one of the branches of a tree inside the same ground.
The batsman started running to add runs in their scoreboard.
The opposite team appealed for ‘lost ball’ signal from the umpire but, as ball was visible from the pitch, umpired called ground staff to axe the tree and get the ball back.
After unsuccessful attempt, ground staff brought a rifle to shot the branch and get the ball back. After so many attempts, the bowling team found the ball.
By this time, the Victorians had scored 286 runs.
According to reports, interestingly, nobody could catch the ball before touching the ground and after it, the Victorians declared the innings. And if we believe on it, they won the match after creating this history.
But, there is no evidence available of this innings.
