In this study, the data have been used to calculate for
the first time the MSW Self Sufficiency Indicator for a
country. The system considered by the Fragkou et al. (2010)
had 2.5 million inhabitants, a surface of 500 km2 and an
average total MSW generated of 1.25 million tonnes/year. By
comparison, Romania has 10 times more inhabitants, 400
times wider surface and generates 6 times more waste. It
is an instrument easy to use to give a quick diagnose of
a solid waste management system, however, this indicator
does not provide any information regarding the air emissions
and other associated environmental impacts.
2.4. Carbon Footprint methodology
The Carbon Footprint (CF) was calculated according to a
methodology proposed by Cifrian et al. (2012), based on
Eq. (2):
CF =
i,j
Qmi,j × EFi,j
