The C/N ratio obtained from the addition of EFB, POME, decan-
ter cake slurry and turning treatment compares well with the re-
sults obtained by Baharuddin et al. (2009) where EFB and POME
were used on a pilot scale to form compost. Going by the fact that
in their study, EFB with initial C/N ratio of 58.5 was converted to
final compost with 12.7 C/N ratio in 60 days. Whereas, the pres-
ent study successfully converted EFB with initial C/N ratio 63.67
to final compost with C/N ratio of 18.65 in just 51 days. Further-
more, it could be claimed that the initial organic carbon content
of the decanter cake slurry used in this study contributed to the
C/N ratio value of the final compost obtained. However, the
advantage of using the decanter cake slurry which is yet another
waste material from the oil palm mill and consequently solving
more waste management problem in the oil palm plantation far
outweighs the seemingly high value of the final compost C/N
ratio obtained. Moreover, the value of the final compost C/N ratio
achieved is still within the satisfactory maturation level of com-
post fertilizer.
