Lesson ADT 77
Task: Sit on toilet. Prerequisites: COG 3
Concept: This task is obviously the beginning of toilet training. It normally requires basic upper body trunk control. Assistive devices that help with this issue can be cre-ated and used with the student. This activity must be made as positive as reasonable so that the student is willing to proceed to further activities that will ultimately lead to independent toileting behavior. Although the primary goal is for the student to will-ingly sit on a toilet, if any form of elimination (urine or bowel) occurs during Steps 3 through 5, immediately praise and reward the student and stop the activity. Behavioral Objective: The student will sit and remain seated on a toilet for 5 min-utes, or until elimination occurs, for 20 consecutive trials.
Materials: A toilet and a variety of toys, items, or activities that are enjoyed by the student.
Task Analysis:
1. While the student is fully clothed, escort the student to a toilet and demon-strate to him or her the concept of lifting the lid and sitting on the toilet. Talk to the student in a positive way throughout the session.
2. Continue Step 1, modifying the task to guiding, but do not force, the student through the process of sitting. Provide reinforcement that is known to be pleasurable, such as a toy or music. If reasonable, only use this type of reward for this specific activity so that a known pleasure becomes associated with this task. A good beginning target would be 1 minute. If difficulties occur, shorten the time to 30 seconds.
3. With respect for privacy, begin to practice Step 2 with clothing undone as needed. Gradually extend the time period to 5 minutes.
4. Reduce physical prompting to verbal prompting.
5. Reduce prompting to a total-task verbal request: "(Name), please sit on this toilet.
