NICU and PICU monitors have many features in common with those used for adults in
the intensive care units (Neuman, 1988a; Brans, 1995). Patient monitors have developed
into a computer platform requiring sophisticated microprocessors and software (see
Chapter 98). Some important specifications of which to be aware are performance specifications,
network capabilities, interface capabilities, operating conditions, and support
issues. Evaluating the processing and software capabilities of a monitor can be similar to
evaluating those of a computer. One should evaluate the main processor speed and type
of chip (e.g., Motorola® MPC860P (PowerPC), 66MHz). Also the graphical capabilities
as determined by the graphics processor (e.g., 8-, 16-, or 32-bit). At a minimum, the monitor
should have local area network (LAN) communication capability to communicate to
a central monitoring device.
