3. Seedling survival
Survival was measured as recruited seedlings at least 1 year old and alive at the end of the
study period. Due to the fires at Pha Daeng we used data for all the plots up to February 2002 and did
separate tests on the BMSM plots up until September 2002. However no statistical difference was
found when using all the plots or just BMSM plots. By the end of the project (September 2002) there
were 859 seedlings, and 486 from two species, Melastoma malabathricum (390 seedlings) and Trema orientalis (96
seedlings). If we examined only up to February 2002, 365 seedlings survived one year or more on the plot
treatments. Significantly more survived under perches (254) than at control sites (111), Mann
