Saurauia roxburghii was found in large numbers but only in the last four months of the
project and only on one plot so presumably had not had a chance to germinate or seedlings were too
small to identify. Callicarpa arborea is perhaps the biggest anomaly having been recorded regularly
from several plots throughout the project in large numbers. These seeds had germination rates of up to
67% when fruits were collected ripe and the seeds sown in a nursery (FORRU, 2000). Many of the
seeds from the traps may have been immature as bulbuls were seen to be feeding on fruits before they
were ripe (A. Pierce, pers. obs.). and other similar projects have found no Callicarpa germinating
(McClanahan and Wolfe, 1992). McClanahan and Wolfe (1992) also found very low recruitment rates
in the field (0.056% for 12 genera over a 7-year study).
