We leveraged learners’ prior knowledge by
including trees common in the community such
as the white pine and white oak. he local trees
were paired with contrastive non-native species,
such as the limber pine shown in Figure 1. At

Investigator mobile website included text that
made references to common landmarks in the
local community as well as reference to shared
cultural experiences relevant to 10-year old
children to evoke prior knowledge to support
meaning-making.
