here I was a current Live-in Firefighter in Prince Georges County, MD. I responded to a call that tested my identity as a firefighter or a fireman. The box alarm was dispatched for a dwelling with multiple calls. I was on the First arriving Engine and we had fire showing from the basement. The conditions were challenging; heavy smoke, fire rolling up the basement stairs and into the first floor, and superheated gases pressing us down to the floor. After we were called to evacuate the building, two fireman from the first arriving Truck Company become disoriented and trapped within the building. This happened as conditions were getting worse and the Truck company members became trapped when the front door was closed as the rest of the crew evacuated the structure. Both of the trapped fireman were rescued and survived, with one suffering burns on nearly 50% of his body. Myself and the other five firemen had burns that were not as severe. On paper the fire looked as if it was an ordinary basement fire, but this fire has become one of the worst fires in my career, and a pivotal point in my career. This Incident made me change the way I see and look at things and since then I have made some great changes in my career for the better. The things I heard and saw, the screams of my brothers as crews rushed back in to rescue him, the smell of the fire, and the look in my fellow brother’s eyes after the call will be something that stay with me throughout my career. I have come to understand that this life is more than running calls and hanging at the station.
