Recall that multimedia applications typically stream media using the UDP transport protocol with no control mechanism. In both the mentioned examples above, adapting the transmission and using FEC affects the transmission rate of the streaming. The control mechanism becomes a crucial component that must make the right decision whether the
increase/decrease of the transmission rate would yield a net benefit to the performance. Thus, it is very important for the control to have knowledge of the congestion. In this paper, we study network congestion in media streaming. We show a
perspective of which congestion in media streaming can be different from that of data applications. In the following, we examine network congestion in media streaming. We then conduct a simulation study to determine the effect of the changing transmission rate
to the congestion. Finally, we discuss the implication
of the study how it can be beneficial to media
streaming.
