INTRODUCTION
SinceNewell's(1965)studyofcoprophagybyHydrobiaulvaeandMacomabalthica,there hasbeen
considerable speculation on thenutritional significance(to detritivores)andchemical natureofdetrital
nitrogen.Newel1(1965)noted thatfreshlyegested
fecalpellets,originallylow in nitrogen, becamemore
nitrogen-enrichedasmicrobial colonizationofthepellets proceeded.Therelatively protein-richbacterial
cellswere assumedtoaccountfortheincreasein%N
andtobethesourceofnutritiontothedetritivores.
Subsequent studiesconfirmedthatbothnitrogencontentandmicrobialpopulation increasewith timein
detritus derivedfromamphipodfecalpellets(Hargrave,1970a,b) andfromcoastal macrophytes (Fellet
al.,1975; HarrisonandMann,1975;Roman,1977).
Becausethe nitrogencontentoffoodisgenerally
regardedas animportant indicatorofnutritionalvalue
(Russell-Hunter,1970;BoydandGoodyear,1971)and
