reported to promote a healthy gastrointestinal ecosystem of pigs post weaning in terms of the maintenance of some Lac- tobacillus species in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) (Tran et al.. 2012) However, since Escherichia coli utilize lactose as an energy- and carbon source, the potential benefits from Lactobacillus species when feeding lactose may be limited or negated by E. coli (Wells et al., 2005). Whey permeate (WP) is a by-product of cheese production containing 80% lactose (Manurung,2012). Due to its lactose abundance, wp could be a potential alternative nutrient source to benefit piglet microbiota and gut health post weaning. Fermentation of wP before feeding to piglets may be a strategy to reduce the consumption of WP by pathogenic E. coli (Manurung, 2012).
