New requirements for skills, competencies, and knowledge emerge from the
innovation-driven knowledge society. This paper explores the possibilities and
challenges for developing new integrated physical, virtual, social and mental
learning spaces that promote knowledge creation and collaboration. My main
claim is that it is vital to take into account modern theories of learning when
designing physical learning environments. Especially, this is important in the
context of universities which have maintained their basic forms of knowledge
practices for centuries. Now it appears to be time for profound changes, due to
the changes in societies, technologies and the demands of working life. This
paper introduces projects that aim to change the design of future learning environments
in higher education.
