This is the fundamental problem with all heuristics, that while they illuminate or help us to focus on some things, they can distort other
things or hide them from our view altogether. Later in this book we will discuss how this aspect of dividing people into groups can lead
to two particular kinds of problems: one we call “lumping,” thinking that all of the people who belong to one “culture” are the same, and
the other we call “binarism,” thinking people are different just because they belong to different “cultures.”
