For gaming audio I'd prefer to run a single cable to my AV Receiver which has no 5.1 inputs. Does this motherboard's audio chipset pass thru Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect via the optical out?
According to the Realtek ALC889 specs optional software is required??
I'm yet to purchase but this is the perfect board if I can get proper gaming 5.1 via a single cable.

Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)
The simplest and best way to pass through Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio is to use HDMI either from your GPU if using discrete GPU {if used the GPU is the sound source} or MOBO I/O HDMI; version 1.3-1.4 is required. Otherwise don't use the HDMI and use only your GPU's DVI {digital} or D-Sub {analog} for video and Optical S/PDIF audio.
If you use the onboard HDMI then in the BIOS you need to change the PDIF Out Type -> HDMI.
The onboard sound is essentially ALC889 + additional support for:
- X-Fi® Xtreme Fidelity™
- EAX® Advanced™ HD 5.0
- THX® TruStudio PRO™
- Creative ALchemy
IF your receiver can decode 'Dolby Digital Live or DTS' then that audio passes through. If you want to listen on your PC then you need the appropriate software + codec.

Hi, I should be receiving my board tomorrow. I will let you know when I get the system put together. Its really annoying that information on which boards support these technologies is non existent....
If your in a hurry gigabyte is the only company which somewhat advertizes it. Its part of the "Dolby Home Theater" suite. So any board with that label will do Dolby digital live.
Here is the uATX version.

If I can find the 1155 back plate to my watercooler I should have my Maximus IV GENE Z system running by Sat or Sunday.
Also, the ALC889 is capable of both DDL or DTS Connect. But the motherboard manufacturer has to pay a licensing fee to either company they decide to use. Thats why its not enabled on all boards with this chip (optional software required). Same goes for all other codecs that support them.
