The size fractions considered in this study were 0e2, 0e4 and
0e8 mm for both types of BA and they were obtained by sieving the
collected samples. With the aim of distinguish the dilution effect of
the largest particles, a second stage of upgrading experiments
considered the fractions 0e2, 2e4 and 4e8 mm of WBA with a
moisture content to 15 wt%. The moisture content was adjusted by
the addition of water. The chemical composition of the major elements
of BA as a function of size fraction was determined by X-Ray
Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) and is presented in Table 1. As it
can be seen, the finest fractions are rich in calcium from the
crumble of natural and synthetic ceramics while the content of
silica increases as the fraction size does. For the major metallic elements,
Fe and Al, their presence is expected to be greater in the
finest fractions, where the performance of magnetic concentrators
and trammeling is respectively less effective.
